The Virginia Tech Controller’s Office is seeking to hire a Payroll Supervisor to join our team. The position reports directly to the Director of Payroll and supervises the payroll operations team (three full-time employees and up to four wage employees). This position will manage the day-to-day payroll function for university employees across all Virginia Tech locations using multiple systems for payroll operations and completing employment eligibility verifications (I-9) while also ensuring compliance with wage and hourly regulatory reporting requirements.
This working supervisor will have knowledge of payroll fundamentals and extensive payroll experience to complete transactions as simple as processing tax forms and data entry into payroll systems to more complex activities, such as unemployment claim validation/calculations and determining the taxability and employability of the university’s non-resident alien population.
Supervise team and routinely assess workload to redistribute assignments as necessary to optimize workflow;
Provide oversight for the I-9 process;
Oversee the review of applicable processes and procedures to ensure compliance and increase efficiency;
Administer the documentation of legal employment verification for all university employees and the tracking of work authorization for non-resident alien status employees;
Manage the process for changing the distribution of funding sources for past payrolls (labor redistributions);
Serve as a backup for Virginia Employment Commission (VCE) reporting; and
Complete special projects and duties as assigned (e.g., prepare supporting documentation for audit requests, system upgrades, new initiatives etc.).

Ability to read, understand, and apply complex state and university policies and procedures
Bachelor’s degree in business (or related field) or Associates degree (in business or related field) with significant relevant payroll experience;
Experience processing I-9’s using electronic systems (e.g. Equifax);
Experience interpreting and applying regulatory payroll requirements (Federal and state);
Demonstrated experience with applicable payroll concepts and regulations (e.g., labor laws, employment classification, payments to non-resident aliens, leave payouts, benefit deductions, etc.);
Experience working with Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems such as Banner Payroll/HR or other automated payroll systems in a high volume environment; and
Proficient utilizing current software applications word processing, spreadsheets, electronic mail, and databases.
Experience working in a higher education setting;
Experience with time and attendance software;
Experience with non-resident employment verification requirements
