Summary:

As the Accounting and Reporting Manager, you will be an integral member of the Controller’s team, responsible for financial reporting in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), developing, implementing, and assisting in maintaining appropriate internal controls that enable appropriate oversight of HHMI’s assets.  You will leverage your comprehensive knowledge of accounting principles, concepts, practices, and standards in performing duties related to accounting and financial reporting. 

Reporting to the Assistant Controller, you will join a highly collaborative team committed to supporting and contributing to the organization’s mission and aspirations.

In this role, you will:

  • Assist with the monthly and quarterly financial close process and ensure accurate and timely preparation of the financial statements/reports, reconciliations, and other reports for executive management and third parties.

  • Prepare the Institute’s financial statements in accordance with GAAP, including cash flow statements and footnote disclosures.

  • Assist with the coordination of annual audit and interim audit review activity of external auditors.

  • Prepare the financial statements and footnote disclosures for the Retiree Welfare Benefit Plan (including the VEBA Trust) and 403(b) benefit plans and provide support for the annual external financial statement audits.

  • Review Investments to ensure proper classification, leveling and disclosures.

  • Lead the development and maintenance of the accounting and financial reporting systems and ensure appropriate control over the Institute assets, adequate flexibility, and granularity for management reporting, and appropriate external financial reporting in accordance with GAAP.

  • Analyze current processes and leverage systems (i.e., Workday) to automate and simplify processes, enhance efficiency, increase effectiveness and generally to ensure process improvement opportunities are fully realized.

  • Assist with Lease Accounting system (CoStar) and ensure compliance with Accounting Standard ASC 842.

  • Assist with Worktag requests in Financial Accounting system (Workday), maintenance of account posting rules and other system requests.

  • Work with Assistant Controller in reviewing, analyzing, interpreting, and implementing new financial accounting standards, disclosure requirements and guidance issued by FASB, AICPA and other accounting bodies and apply research to the Institute’s financial results as appropriate.

  • Maintain knowledge of trends and development in the field by reading appropriate articles, journals, and related material, and by attending seminars and conferences and apply knowledge gained to day-to-day accounting and reporting work.

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a combination of education and related experience.

  • Certified Public Accountant required.

  • Minimum six years of experience in progressively responsible management positions in accounting.

  • Public accounting experience preferred.

  • In-depth understanding and knowledge of US GAAP and accounting standards, including Investment Accounting.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite; advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel – experience with Power Query, Power Pivot and Data Models preferred

  • Knowledge of Workday Financials preferred.

  • Thorough understanding of the principles and practices of accounting theory and relevant statements of accounting practice, and ability to resolve complex problems requiring their application.

  • Ability to interpret and communicate complex financial information.

  • Strong attention to detail, thoroughness, and accuracy, balanced with the ability to see the big picture.

  • Excellent time management skills and able to plan and prioritize effectively.

  • A hands-on, ‘roll up your sleeves’, action-oriented approach.

  • Ability to manage several projects and/or workflows simultaneously.

  • Self-motivated and able to manage processes and lead projects with limited supervision.

  • Ability to analyze processes, increase efficiencies, and focus on continuous improvement.

  • Ability to work as a team member in a highly collaborative environment.

  • Ability to effectively interact with people at all levels within and outside the Institute.

  • Ability to investigate, interpret and resolve complex financial matters in a timely and efficient manner.

  • Ability to quickly learn new technology.

Physical Requirements:

Remaining in a normal seated or standing position for extended periods of time; reaching and grasping by extending hand(s) or arm(s); dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers, for example using a keyboard; communication skills using the spoken word; ability to see and hear within normal parameters; ability to move about workspace. The position requires mobility, including the ability to move materials weighing up to several pounds (such as a laptop computer or tablet).
